I think you have disabled DRM_I915_FBDEV and this causes a black screen when KMS kicks in. This is newly "optional" but it seems to break KMS when you disable it. "Choose this option if you have a need for the legacy fbdev support. Note that this support also provide the linux console support on top of the intel modesetting driver."

I've been having the same problem with 3.13.1 and 3.13.5 using hardened sources. Building DRM_I915_FBDEV does not do anything for me, but I've been disabling KMS to get to a command line.
After doing some playing around, enabling DRM_I915_FBDEV AND CONFIG_X86_SYSFB was able to resolve the issue. Looks like this is not a bug, it's a bad documentation and kernel config.
