Hi, I've got an IBM netvista with an intel onboard chipset that deals with network, audio, etc. The audio driver needed is the i810_audio (ICH2) along with the ac97_codecs. I've tested them compiled in the kernel or as a module and i'm getting the same problems. With the drivers as modules, the insmod of ac97_codecs and i810_audio seem to work fine and they're correctly linked together when i do an "lsmod". Still : "cat something.wav > /dev/dsp" gives nothing and when I start KDE, i've got a message saying "sound server error : cpu overloaded". I've read messages on the net and on some newsgroups saying that this was fixed in 2.4.18 kernel. I'm using the 2.4.19-gentoo kernel, maybe this issue is distribution specific. I'm ready to test stuffs if needed. Regards. Guillaume APOSTOLY
Try this in mjc-sources. Sorry for the slow response..
What are mjc-sources ? a replacement to the kernel gentoo-sources ? ps: was not so slow ;o)
Ok, i'll give a try with the sys-kernel/mjc-sources-2.4.19_rc1 package. But what is the relation betwenn the gentoo-sources and the mjc-sources ?
- Same problem with sys-kernel/mjc-sources - I've installed the mjc-sources kernel and recompiled it, after rebooting using this kernel (uname : ) i've got the same problem when launching KDE (sound server overload). I didn't try to cat something.wav into /dev/dsp (because i installed the new kernel at home via internet from my office and ... i can't ear the sound 20kms away ;o) but i guess it does nothing... Another idea ? ps: still, i'm happy to have this last kernel :o))
I found out that on my IBM, the codec chipset used along with the i810 is the new SoundMax codec. This is a codec that provides better sound quality than the old ones but ... that seems, not to be supported under linux ! I've looked a little on the net, found people having the same problems, and no clues to write the driver. I think we should close this bug though i'm no sure it's not gentoo related. Sorry for the mess ... I'll perhaps look for the AC97_codec module's maintener for support ...
