Description Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2014-02-24 21:53:56 UTC
I would expect its autounmask feature to want me to simply enable "static-libs", but it fails instead:
# emerge -1 =dev-libs/elfutils-0.158 -av

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild     U ~] dev-libs/elfutils-0.158 [0.149] USE="bzip2 nls {test%*} utils%* zlib -lzma -static-libs% (-threads)" ABI_X86="(64%*) -32% (-x32)" 4,938 kB

Total: 1 package (1 upgrade), Size of downloads: 4,938 kB

!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

dev-libs/elfutils:0

  (dev-libs/elfutils-0.149::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
    >=dev-libs/elfutils-0.100[static-libs(+)] required by (sys-devel/prelink-20110511::gentoo, installed)

  (dev-libs/elfutils-0.158::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
    =dev-libs/elfutils-0.158

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously. If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously. You may want to try a larger value of
the --backtrack option, such as --backtrack=30, in order to see if
that will solve this conflict automatically.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

Is this expected?

emerge has this issue in several places. The problem is that without -uDN world, it doesn't have all the freedom that's necessary to do what you want. It would probably do what you want during a world update.

Will try, thanks!
