Description Adam Gergely 2014-02-23 16:46:23 UTC
I appologize because I'm filing this bug only today, it's a bug that affected me a while ago.

I also apologize if I describe some inconsistencies, because I do not remember exactly the situation.
I should have filed this bug when the problem happened, I'm sorry.

However, I want to post it here, perhaps somebody else knows this bug and can provide a better description.

The problem:
When emerging OpenVPN version 2.3.2, it fails in the configure phase using the following error message:
"ip utility is required but missing" or "route utility is required but missing", depending on wether I use OpenVPN with iproute2 or ifconfig in the USE flags.

Both iproute2 and ifconfig (net-tools) are properly installed on my system, that's for sure.

The problem seems to be gone if I reinstall, for example, the iproute2 package. (I am not sure if I reinstalled iproute2 or net-tools, but I reinstalled one of them, that's for sure).
I need to re-emerge iproute2 (for example) and after that OpenVPN emerges OK.
But if I try to reinstall OpenVPN another time, it will still fail with one of the above errors, depending on what USE flags I use.
Comment 1 Adam Gergely 2014-02-23 16:49:06 UTC
P.S. This happened on my system which is a AMD64 arch. I don't know if this problem also happens on i686 systems or not.

Perhaps someone can emerge OpenVPN 2.3.2 on a amd64 arch, and see if it fails on the configure phase or not...

Thank you.

2. The complete build log:
--------------------------
I'm sorry, but I cannot post the build log as this problem happened a while ago, and I was able to successfully build openvpn after reinstalling net-tools or iproute2 (I can't remember which of them).

But, as I said before, I remember that the error message was present in the configure phase and was something like: "ip utility required but missing" or "route utility required but missing" and emerge failed. I had both the iproute2 and the net-tools packages installed.

I periodically (based on an update protocol) update my servers, but because this is a production server, I can only update it under certain conditions.
My next update will be in April 2014.
If the error reappears at the next world update, I shall post more info here.

Until than, I don't know what to say... perhaps try to emerge openvpn yourself, on an amd64 arch, and see if the error appears...

Thank you.
