/usr/share/doc/netifrc-0.1/net.example.bz2 contains
# VLAN (802.1q support)
# For VLAN support, emerge sys-apps/iproute2
# The old vconfig based VLAN support is no longer available.

While the Handbook Part 4 Chapter 3 says:

"For VLAN support, emerge net-misc/vconfig."

Suggest updating it to say something like sys-apps/iproute2[-minimal]
