A conscious decision after someone complained about it.  Is there any reason I should or should not include it?  I can put it back.

What was the complaint?  Xtended has some new features which are nice:

Thta it is a fork and therefore should not be striggered with just USE=xtended but should be a separate package.  bug #499976.

I'm going to reopen that bug for discussion.
