i run into the same problem, and it turned out this happens because of different versions of app-emulation/libguestfs and app-emulation/libguestfs-appliance.

So if You copy the libguestfs-appliance-1.20.0.ebuild file and files/env.file into a local overlay and just rename the ebuild to the same version as the app-emulation/libguestfs ebuild (1.24.0 in my case) this installs w/o any problem and a virt-resize runs smooth :)

i've added a blocker against older versions of libguestfs. this should largely force people to upgrade things.
