Description Christopher Smith 2002-07-14 17:34:03 UTC
X is properly set up on my new system (I believe), and both KDE and Gnome are
installed. Since the people who will be using it will be using KDE (almost)
exclusively, I decided on kdm as a display manager.

Normal users are able to log in, but unless they choose failsafe, the screen
twitches a few times and comes straight back to the login screen. Identical
behavior follows under gdm and xdm. Debug output from gdm shows that the child
of the login manager (which I assume is gnome-session or its equivalent) dies
instantly and returns 0. Failsafe mode (with one xterm) works, and I can then
start a Gnome or KDE session by using the appropriate command, and the system
works perfectly when using startx from a VC login.

And if you use gdm ?
Comment 2 Christopher Smith 2002-07-15 16:57:29 UTC
This bug is reproducible under gdm, kdm, and xdm.

Incidentally, this is on a brand-new box that I'm considering wiping and setting
up differently anyway, so if you think that this bug is worth going after, I'll
give you r00t on it.

Urk. Try the new setup, and see if it still occurs. My online time is a
bit short, and erretic, so do not know if I will get the chance to have
a look on your box. This is except if you are not going to reinstall in
the next day or so, or are awake now ;-)
Comment 4 Christopher Smith 2002-07-17 14:16:28 UTC
Gak! I'm awake and lively right now, but unfortunately I just took the box
offline this morning due to lack of ethernet ports. I'll reconnect it as soon
as I can if azarah will tell me when he needs it, at which time he'll be
provided with SSH info. :-)

Oh, and if it's wiped, it'll be done Saturday, since I'll be gone next week and
it'll take nearly a week to recompile an entire system.

Just mail me what you need .... Ill hopefully be online same time tomorrow
night.

Last silly question .. do they have a ~/.xsession (the users that is) ?
Comment 6 Rigo 2002-08-19 15:09:33 UTC
Have the same problem sometimes....Well, like now ;)

Easily reproducable by pressing <POWER OFF HERE> in a busy X-session ;)

My X-session freezes when I use de DRI module under X and switch to console &
back :'-( I have do a reset to use my machine again and afterwards gdm is
unusable (Keeps saying there's already a display running on :0...When I opt for
:1 --> Reset X ...When I don't --> Reset X

Nothing helps....Cleaning /tmp or /var/run or /var/lib/gdm ...It keeps saying my
DISPLAY won't react...Ofcourse not...There isn't any ;)

Vaguely remember last time I emerged X again ...Luckily I'm not a processor ;)

Shall I wait with that solution this time ? I mean if this happens to somebody
without shell-experience there're lost...

Ps. I had this with all 1.x releases...
