The same with sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.42.9
I did e2image of that filesystem, next I succesfully did offline resize.
Do you know if this is still an issue in recent kernels?
There have been a lot of changes since 3.12.8. Please reopen if you are hitting this with any of the more recent hardened-sources.
I couldn't find sys-kernel/hardened-sources-3.12.8 to reproduce problem and then check new kernel.
