Emerge fails when trying to unpack the tar.gz (which unpacks just fine using tar xf)

From your build.log file:

gzip: /var/tmp/portage/dev-java/oracle-jdk-bin-1.7.0.51-r1/distdir/jdk-7u51-linux-x64.tar.gz: Permission denied


Please check the permissions of the tarball. They must be that permissive that the portage user (uid 250) can unpack the archive.
