Description Fabian Köster 2014-01-18 09:34:16 UTC
Yesterday I tried for several hours to nail down a problem with my multiseat setup on Gentoo stable. I did not succeed so I try to collect all information here.

The first seat is connected to Intel GPU, the second one to a 17e9:0378 DisplayLink Plugable UGA-2K-A.

I use the udl kernel driver and modesetting xorg driver.

I used loginctl attach seat1 [...] for connecting displaylink output, keyboard and mouse to second seat and everything seems to work perfectly, GDM spawns on both seats.

The first seat (seat0) works as normal but when I try to login on the second seat, the process seems to stuck. GNOME is not started. Also, there are no suspicious messages in any of my logs (systemd journal, dmesg, xorg.log, gdm.log, .xsession-errors).

I use Gentoo stable, more precise the following configuration:

sys-apps/systemd-208-r2 was built with the following:
USE="acl filecaps firmware-loader gudev introspection kmod pam policykit tcpd -audit -cryptsetup -doc -gcrypt -http -lzma -python -qrcode (-selinux) -test -vanilla -xattr" ABI_X86="64 -32 -x32" PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="python2_7" PYTHON_TARGETS="python2_7"

x11-base/xorg-server-1.14.3-r2 was built with the following:
USE="ipv6 kdrive nptl suid udev xorg -dmx -doc -minimal (-selinux) -static-libs -tslib -xnest -xvfb"
LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1 -Wl,--as-needed -Wl,-z,lazy"

gnome-base/gdm-3.8.4-r3 was built with the following:
USE="branding gnome-shell introspection ipv6 systemd tcpd -accessibility -audit -debug -fallback -fprint -plymouth (-selinux) -test -xinerama"

gnome-base/gnome-session-3.8.4-r1 was built with the following:
USE="ipv6 systemd -debug -doc -gconf"

sys-auth/pambase-20120417-r3 was built with the following:
USE="cracklib gnome-keyring sha512 systemd (-consolekit) -debug -minimal -mktemp -pam_krb5 -pam_ssh -passwdqc (-selinux)"

I am not sure in whis packages this bug is contained so I assign it to GNOME as a start.

Looking into systemd's journal the last lines of the stuck login are:

Jan 17 20:56:31 leonardo gnome-keyring-daemon[3418]: Gck: gck_module_new: assertion `funcs != NULL' failed
Jan 17 20:56:31 leonardo gnome-keyring-daemon[3418]: module_instances: assertion `module' failed

Jan 17 20:56:31 leonardo gdm-password][3410]: gkr-pam: the password for the login keyring was invalid.

But this does not seem to be the problem, on first seat with successful login it says

Any suggestions or ideas how to further debug this?

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Multiseat setup with systemd, GNOME, GDM as explained above with second seat DisplayLink.
2. Try to login on second seat
Actual Results:
Login process seems to be stuck

Expected Results:
GNOME session should start.

This problem also occurred on RHEL 7 Beta 1, but as far as I remember not on Fedora 19.

Will CC systemd team too as I am not familiar with multiseat support :S

Did you try to login from gdm using a simpler desktop like icewm? Does it start? (to try to allocate the problem a bit)

Good idea.

> Did you try to login from gdm using a simpler desktop like icewm? Does it

Yes, I tried GNOME, GNOME Classic, XSession and IceWM but it makes no difference.
Comment 9 Fabian Köster 2014-01-18 11:28:00 UTC
I think the process is stuck before it executes the desktop's session script.
Comment 10 Fabian Köster 2014-01-18 11:38:50 UTC
I will install Fedora 19 on a second hdd to see if the problem really does not occur there.

So, I verified it works with Fedora 19 out-of-the-box (without any updates installed).

Fedora 19 uses

systemd-204
GNOME 3.8.2
GDM 3.8.3
Comment 12 Fabian Köster 2014-01-18 12:35:07 UTC
I will also try Fedora 20 later.
Comment 13 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2014-01-18 12:55:13 UTC
Yeah, better try a version running systemd-208
Comment 14 Fabian Köster 2014-01-18 14:29:19 UTC
Ok, on Fedora 20 it only works when the displaylink device is not already connected at boot. I remember to have seen a bug-report about a race-condition which causes this. But nevertheless, afterwards the login works perfectly and this bug does not occur.

systemd 208
GNOME 3.10.2
gdm 3.10.0.1
Comment 15 Fabian Köster 2014-01-27 17:26:47 UTC
As I do not have permanent access to the machine with this bug, I setup the same Gentoo installation on an external harddrive booted by my laptop.

Surprisingly, the bug does not occur there, although it is the same set of software and the identical DisplayLink adapter. Also, the primary seat is connected to an Intel GPU.

So I now need to find out what the determinant difference between the two systems for this behavior. Any hints on debugging are very welcome!
Comment 16 Fabian Köster 2014-03-10 22:53:04 UTC
After upgrade to GNOME 3.10 it works now.
