Description Andreas K. Hüttel archtester gentoo-dev 2014-01-17 17:03:20 UTC
Please let outage/restore notifications on the infra-status website autogenerate mails to gentoo-dev-announce with the corresponding message!

This would further(!) minimize the number of enquiries on the infra irc channel and also the number of user questions.

It could also be useful to have these posted to the front-page news feed, various social medias etc.

Well, if it goes into the "gentoo news" feed, it is picked up by planet and its rss (and then e.g. forwarded to the facebook page).

Automated emails:
- Not all outages are relevant to gentoo devs
- Selecting what to post would be more work (which defies the point of the site)
- Our own devs should be the easiest group of people to 're-educate' about the status site
- Notices can be updated, emails can't
- Outages the size of overlays happen once every… what years? I'd rather spend time writing code for more useful things.

Feeds:
- Again hard to automate, I fear we might spam the channels
- We do have a feed in place for people who want *all* status info

So, for future *large* outages like this, the lesson learned I guess is to use our information outlets to point at the status site as soon as the issue is known. Given the low frequency of these issues, that can be done manually.
I don't see the value in doing the same thing for small-scale issues (be it automated or not).

(from Facebook, as a reply to a direct, unfiltered syndication of the feed)
Noah Cooper May I suggest you make these posts with some sort of editorial comment? As with the many other pages I subscribe to here with sincere interest, I am not interested in most of what's posted. Some context would help me know whether I want to click or not.

FWIW I've removed that feed forward again already.
