I'd like to be able to boot into an XDMCP session instead of having xdm run locally. Well, ideally I'd like a local xdm login on :0 and an xdmcp login on :1 'cyfred' on #gentoo suggested I submit this on bugs.gentoo.org I'd have a look at it myself, but I haven't got a clue really. (see if I can put 'X -query ip-address :1' in there somewhere :) ) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
devs im going to work on something here to sort of intergrate with the new xinit scripts i worked on before.. or would it be more preferable to have a xdmcp script (the only reason im actually following this through is because I will be setting up a xdmcp server for my uni lug soonish and this is the sort of thing I would want to do on the server so we can have remote logins blah blah blah...) Comments would be nice
as it happens, gdm allows me to configure it to do exactly what I want. So this feature request can be closed as far as I'm concerned. Read the gdm.conf file for more information.
Thats fine for your case, however not everyone will have a full set of X and gnome libraries installed to run gdm. My theory behind this is for easy setup of X thin clients, basically just need a local Xserver installed and nothing else.. Ultimately this is a minor point, as it could be done by just modifying the session commands for xdm/gdm/kdm etc, but thats a little different in the new init scripts.
Andrew, if you're interested in working on this, please be sure to submit it upstream. If we have this whole custom init script setup that nobody else has, it'll be difficult to support.
No interest in implementing this.
