I often need to manually compress build.log files stored into /var/log/portage/build because they are bigger than 1 MB and bugzilla refuses to upload them ;) 

Also, after months the dir can become a bit big and this could also be improved a lot compressing them

Maybe it could follow the same policy as applied for stuff in /usr/share/doc: that files are compressed above a concrete size :)

If you enable FEATURES=compress-build-logs then it will compress them on-the-fly with gzip.
