I have installed rekonq on a system without full KDE. When I use rekonq I get tons of messages boxes "rekonq does not know how to handle this protocol: about". As soon as I have installed kde-base/kdebase-kioslaves the problem disappears.
Did you you receive a warning after installing it telling you that you don't have kde-base/kdebase-runtime-meta installed?
I have just looked at the log right now and I noticed the message. I have tried emerging kde-base/kdebase-runtime-meta, on this system this operation needs 32 additional packages to be merged while kde-base/kdebase-startkde needs 57 packages. Wouldn't be better to put only the mandatory packages in RDEPEND to have a minimal installation? I understand this requires more effort on your side but as I don't have installed KDE I'd prefer to install only the strictly required packages.

Oh I agree completely - I just wanted to check that the message is still being displayed anyway.
Moreover rekonq supports also kwalletd but it seems it's not mandatory because on my system it saves password credentials without having kwalletd installed. Thanks for the support.
I guess you use the "new tab opens blank page" option? We should probably discuss the issue with upstream, since there is no indication that they intend to to depend on kioslaves - and indeed other distros don't either.

Thanks for reporting. This is fixed in cvs now. Please sync in some hours to get the changes. + + 13 Aug 2014; Johannes Huber <johu@gentoo.org> rekonq-2.4.2-r1.ebuild: + RDEPEND on kde-base/kdebase-kioslaves by Fabio Rossi <rossi.f@inwind.it>, bug + #497734. +
