Comment 1 Bob Johnson 2014-01-06 09:50:02 UTC
Probably caused by this fix:

https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=486674

Almost certainly the result of a broken build system, as in:

https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=477638

Compiles fine with the postgres USE flag disabled.
Comment 2 Bob Johnson 2014-01-06 10:02:32 UTC
Oops, meant to say 'issue', not 'fix'. Once eselect-postgresql-1.2.1 hits stable this bug should be resolved (although the real fix is to get the vtk build system to use pg_config properly.)

Sorry. This bug can probably be closed due to the above. I didn't find the eselect-postgresql issue until after I'd filed the bug.

How does stuffing it in a tar archive help compression?
Comment 4 Justin Lecher (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-01-07 17:18:42 UTC
I am heavily working on a version bump, which should fix all problems.
Comment 5 Aaron W. Swenson gentoo-dev 2014-01-11 04:28:59 UTC
Which version of app-admin/eselect-postgresql do you have installed?
Comment 6 Bob Johnson 2014-01-11 05:51:38 UTC
I'm using the current stable amd64 version:

$ emerge -pv eselect-postgresql

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] app-admin/eselect-postgresql-1.2.0 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

$ eselect postgresql list
Available PostgreSQL Slots
  9.3 * server-9.3.2 base-9.3.2 docs-9.3.2

I don't understand. It was a huge build log. I was hesitant to even attach it, but also hesitant to hack it to a size that was up-loadable. Should I not attach such large logs in the future? I'm not sure what the accepted practices are.

Please upgrade to app-admin/eselect-postgresql-1.2.1 and confirm that it resolves your issue.

I don't have problems with this. Please also try vet version 6.0.0

Yes. I confirm that eselect-postgresql-1.2.1 fixes the compile issue with vtk-5.10.1 and the postgres USE flag.

It appears vtk-6.0.0 just hit portage. I confirm that sci-libs/vtk-6.0.0 compiles fine on my system with app-admin/eselect-postgresql-1.2.0 (the current stable version) and the postgres USE flag. However, to do so, I had to keyword not just the new packages that the vtk-6.0.0 ebuild requires, but also x11-libs/gl2ps in order to bring in gl2ps-1.3.8. Any lower gl2ps package generates the following error:

/var/tmp/portage/sci-libs/vtk-6.0.0/work/VTK6.0.0/Rendering/GL2PS/vtkGL2PSUtilit
ies.cxx:580:35: error: ‘gl2psGetFileFormat’ was not declared in this scope
/var/tmp/portage/sci-libs/vtk-6.0.0/work/VTK6.0.0/Rendering/GL2PS/vtkGL2PSUtilit
ies.cxx: In static member function ‘static void vtkGL2PSUtilities::DrawPathSVG(v
tkPath*, double*, double*, unsigned char*, double*, double, float)’:
/var/tmp/portage/sci-libs/vtk-6.0.0/work/VTK6.0.0/Rendering/GL2PS/vtkGL2PSUtilit
ies.cxx:735:35: error: ‘gl2psGetFileFormat’ was not declared in this scope
/usr/bin/cmake -E cmake_progress_report /var/tmp/portage/sci-libs/vtk-6.0.0/work
/vtk-6.0.0_build/CMakeFiles
make[2]: *** [Rendering/GL2PS/CMakeFiles/vtkRenderingGL2PS.dir/vtkGL2PSUtilities
.cxx.o] Error 1

This seems to be a known issue:
http://geuz.org/pipermail/gl2ps/2012/000380.html

So it appears vtk-6.0.0 fixes the pg_config_ext.h issue that the new eselect-postgresql ebuild is working around, but the new vtk-6.0.0 ebuild probably needs to depend on gl2ps >= 1.3.8.

Thanks for that report, I fixed the version in the deps.

Thank you.

The build system of this package is handling discovery of the PostgreSQL header files incorrectly. It should utilize pg_config instead of guessing.
Comment 13 Justin Lecher (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-01-14 14:09:07 UTC
Perhaps we can use this:

# You may need to manually set:
# PostgreSQL_INCLUDE_DIR - the path to where the PostgreSQL include files are.
# PostgreSQL_LIBRARY_DIR - The path to where the PostgreSQL library files are.

in combination with pg_config.
