The glib ebuild contains the following part for prefix: # make default sane for us if use prefix ; then sed -i -e "s:/usr/local:${EPREFIX}:" gio/xdgmime/xdgmime.c || die This makes libgio look for the mime magic database file in $EPREFIX/share/mime/magic. Since it is actually installed in $EPREFIX/usr/share/mime/magic, it cannot be found, which breaks e.g. MIME type detection in gdk-pixbuf and this in turn breaks image import in inkscape. After changing the ebuild snippet to read: sed -i -e "s:/usr/local/share:${EPREFIX}/usr/share:" gio/xdgmime/xdgmime.c || die the magic file is found and everything works as it's supposed to.
