Description Nikos Chantziaras 2013-12-31 09:40:26 UTC
A world upgrade wants to:

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

  Calculating dependencies... done!
  [ebuild U ] media-libs/openal-1.15.1-r1 [1.15.1] ABI_X86="32%* (64%*) (-x32)"
  [uninstall ] app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-sdl-20131008

However, openal doesn't emerge. So to skip it, I use:

  emerge --resume --skipfirst

This results in:

emerge: It seems we have nothing to resume...

This is wrong. It should perform the:

  [uninstall ] app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-sdl-20131008

step.

Comment 2 Sebastian Luther (few) 2014-01-01 16:19:36 UTC
portage uninstalls packages automatically if and only if an replacement package is about to be installed. Since you're skipping the replacement, the uninstall is skipped too.
Comment 3 Nikos Chantziaras 2014-01-02 00:17:55 UTC
The replacement package was already emerged. openal is NOT the replacement package.

The order was:

libsdl was emerged (the actual replacement for emul-linux-x86-sdl).
openal was about to be emerged, but failed.

In other words, if I had done:

  emerge -uDN @world --exclude openal

then portage would have emerged libsdl and then uninstalled emul-linux-x86-sdl. But that was broken due to openal not emerging and the uninstall operation being put after the openal emerge rather than the libsdl one.

I'm reopening due to this misunderstanding.
Comment 4 Nikos Chantziaras 2014-01-02 00:20:42 UTC
Er, nope. Now I see what you mean. emul-linux-x86-sdl also includes openal in it.

Sorry, I missed that. It was not clear from the package name ("emul-linux-x86-sdl" instead of "emul-linux-x86-sdl-and-openal").
