hmm  also seems that gpm copying is borked with mozilla 1.0 -r3   
errors come up about libxslt.al and then errors out on libphp4.la

Ok, to the php bug....

Try to emerge app-text/sablotron-0.95-r1 and then emerge dev-lang/php
<Oracle mode off>

When this not works, I need more infos like the part where the compile fails, 
your use variables, CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS...

Doug you can close the Bug....Has nothing to do with gcc 3.
