Description Tim Burrell 2004-05-01 08:38:10 UTC
The canadian rsync mirror benow.ca is terribly slow.
His information page says that he's on a 10 MPS link, whatever
that means, since MPS isn't a valid measurement. I did
some checking (on his homepage), and it turns out he's on an
ADSL line.

I really think there should be some standards imposed
as to who can be a mirror and who can not. And I
think that ADSL and cable modems should not be
allowed.

In case anyone is wondering, the fastest transfer rate
I've ever received from the benow.ca mirror is 50 KB/s,
whereas I routinely receive anywhere from 400-800 KB/s
from any of the other mirrors.

Reproducible: Always

Could you be more specific as to a URL for the mirror so I can check it?

Thanks!

I wish I could... the benow.ca web site appears to be down right now.

However, I did gather from his homepage (when it was up) that he had
moved to telus, the "local monopoly," which offers residential and business
flavored DSL lines.

Funny thing is, a traceroute to benow.ca puts him as a co-location
user of hostcentric.com. I checked their pricing scheme, and the minimum
required 5mpbs bandwidth that is needed for a gentoo mirror is around $750/mo.
Something makes me doubt if an individual would be paying that...

One thing I CAN say for certain is that not only does he not have a 10MPS
link to a tier 1 host that his info page says, but that he does not
have anywhere close to the 5mbps. Once again I did "emerge sync" until
his host came up, and sure enough... 40kB/s.

I have nothing against this guy, but as far as I'm concerned having such
a terrible mirror on the list only decreases Gentoo's viability as a
commercial, or enterprise server solution. The mirrors should be fast,
and stable, and not give out adverts for streaming techno, ya?

Here's a snippet from the rsync info his host spits out:

>>> starting rsync with rsync://209.25.160.104/gentoo-portage...
>>> checking server timestamp ...
Welcome to mirrors.benow.ca (209.25.160.104) rsync service.

209.25.160.104 belongs to rsync7.ca.gentoo.org

Seems to be behind by 1 sync as well.

The situation is being handled, thanks for the input.
