Ok here is the result of the latest emerge:
kdelibs 3.2.1 : Recursive call in function (Unknown)

Portage is being cancelled with an error.
I really don't wich one.

This give me a very bad headache.... :(

I had installed a 2004.0 stage3 tarball , I did an emerge -uUD world.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Gentoo 2004.0
2. Install xorg - x11
3. emerge -uUD world
4. reconfigure your system
5. emerge kde

Actual Results:
The emerge failed with an error.

Expected Results:

I am terribly sorry but I installed this version of Gentoo
on a Windows XP box (dual boot).

Because this is a "development" workstation, I wiped it clean and re-installed Windows XP Pro with Oracle 10g on it.

I am really sorry that I cannot help you anymore.
