Description Jesper Brodersen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-04-30 12:20:07 UTC
As a normal day on the IRC, I met redeeman like many others, by coinsidence ;)

First of all he got the open source spirit, where he plays around with everything, where other people would say: "why?", like encoding music in bzip (voice didn't seem to work though) or running a very spare system (because I can).

Some of his documented projects:

Redeeman-Sources:
http://kaspersandberg.com/~redeeman/Redeeman-Sources/ (not online 24/7)

I know he takes a close look on what happens in the kernel-world, and in close contact with Love-Sources and steel300.

For Gentoo Linux, he has done some things too:

Catalyst support:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=1059162#1059162

Mailserver-guide, courier imap/smtp/pop3:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=144837&highlight=

ALSA Sound Mixing guide (dmix):
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=122076&highlight=

Reiser4 enabled Live CD: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=161783&highlight=

I think he would contribute to the Gentoo dev-community, since he is pretty much already a dev ;)

He is interested in doing work for the LiveCD and/or portage-maintaining.
Comment 1 Jon Portnoy (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-04-30 12:29:56 UTC
Portage and LiveCD folks, do you need anybody?
Comment 2 Nicholas Jones (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-05-02 13:14:42 UTC
Portage help starts with finding and fixing bugs. Post patches.
Hang out in #gentoo-portage.

The contributions are good so far, but they don't show any
particulars about portage and I don't recognise the name.

Demonstrate that you're capable.
Demonstrate that you're interested and not going to leave soon.
Demonstrate that you're useful.

I'm just a user, but I'd like to put my two cents in. Redeeman has made his own livecd which is reiser4 capable, he has a ton of useful ebuilds which I have used for new stuff that is not yet in portage.

Check out the link posted in the original message. His site has tons of stuff on it. Quite frankly, I don't know why this guy isn't already a dev.

Just my two cents

-- some guy

So what's the verdict? Does anyone want to take on Redeeman as his mentor?
Comment 5 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-05-30 06:52:50 UTC
As far as the LiveCD goes, all we really need are testers right now. The LiveCD herd is really small (just me) and I only maintain a very small number of packages. The actual LiveCD's for releases are created by a member of each arch, whom is also a member of releng. Perhaps he would do better to start hanging out in #gentoo-releng and joining the gentoo-releng mailing list, as I am sure zhen and company could use some more help on that front.
Comment 6 Jon Portnoy (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-06-02 12:24:35 UTC
No mentor, closing
Comment 7 Bjarke Istrup Pedersen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-06-21 14:38:58 UTC
Well, let me see if I can describe him in a few words.
I see him as a guy who wants to help as many people as possible, and gets things working fast, efficient and stable.
I have been using some of his guides in the forums, and some of his ebuilds from fluidportage, and both works like a charm, he almost always has two minutes to look at somethings, and often comes up with a solution within a few minutes.
Comment 8 Daniel Drake (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-17 12:03:12 UTC
Primary mentor: me
Secondary mentor: Chris White

Interested in working on ebuilds, specifically in the video area.
Comment 9 Ciaran McCreesh 2005-03-17 22:33:52 UTC
Objection.
Comment 10 Stephen Becker (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-17 23:15:24 UTC
Didn't he maintain silly kernel source packages outside of portage that broke people's machines and created numerous invalid bug reports? You might want to reconsider making this guy a dev...
Comment 11 Bjarke Istrup Pedersen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-18 03:09:52 UTC
#9> Because he likes reiser4 and you don't? (Sorry, couldn't help it)
#10> If he isn't going to work on kernels, that doesn't matter, does it?
Comment 12 Ciaran McCreesh 2005-03-18 04:29:32 UTC
#11 -- no, because he's repeatedly shown himself to be totally unsuitable for acting for Gentoo in any official or recognised capacity.
Comment 13 Brian Jackson (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-18 07:34:53 UTC
He has also taken other people's work and posted it the forums as his own.
Comment 14 Daniel Drake (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-18 09:26:23 UTC
Too much negative feedback from existing developers, both on here and on IRC.

Sorry redeeman.
Comment 15 Jesper Brodersen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-19 06:26:44 UTC
Too bad Gentoo again loses an interesting object, because of some individuals have a different opponion. He has a passion for hacking, especially Gentoo, and he has a worry like the rest of us, that Gentoo will end up as Debian or such; slow and boring. Well, enough with the flamewars, this seems to be the end of this bug.
Comment 16 Ciaran McCreesh 2005-03-19 06:35:11 UTC
You're saying we should recruit any daft ricer who makes a noise?
Comment 17 Daniel Drake (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-19 07:49:52 UTC
The fact is I recieved too many concerns from developers that I know and trust. I don't even know redeeman or his capabilities, but we are a community project, and there is no way he would be accepted into the community right now. He may be technically skilled, but theres more to it than that.
