Okay, so messing around, I installed gentoo's own copies of pygame and renpy, which didn't seem to help. Tried running the .py directly, different errors, no dice. Finally installed all of emul-linux-x86-{xlibs,soundlibs,sdl,medialibs,gstplugins} and running the .sh worked. Not sure which one is needed, but reading the KS forums it appears that it is dependent on 32-bit libraries.
Ah, sorry, forgot to mention I didnt use the ebuild, but donwloaded from the KS site.
seems they missed to bundle zlib in /opt/katawa-shoujo/lib/linux-x86/lib
