I explicitly emerged x11-terms/multi-gnome-terminal, and have used it for a couple of days without any problems, other than the initial font selection being broken. I'm not certain if this is my system, or something else. I went to Settings|Tab Preferences and changed the font; now it comes up and works as expected every time.
