Description walt 2013-12-15 01:51:42 UTC
I just updated from gnome2 to gnome3 on amd64(stable), so maybe I've misconfigured something important, I dunno.

First, gcalctool-5.32.2 still works normally, with the menubar at the top of the gcalc window, which allows me to choose between scientific mode, programming mode, financial mode, etc

gcalctool-6.6.2, OTOH, has no visible way to do any of the above, and runs in the basic vanilla mode by default, which makes it almost useless to me.

I spotted this possibly relevant note from upstream in the sources:

Overview of changes in gcalctool 6.5.1

    * Port to GtkApplication
    * Replace menubar with a GMenu

With that thought in mind, I noticed that 6.6.2 links to libgtk-3.so.0.800.7, while gcalctool-5.32.2 has no links whatever to gtk+, either v2 or v3.

Is anyone else seeing the same problem?

You must use "gnome-calculator" instead with gnome 3.8 and newer, since gcalctool was moved to that

I tried running 'gnome-calculator' (a symlink to gcalctool) and got exactly the same result: no menu.

As an experiment I copied the gnome-calculator binary from arch linux to the gentoo machine and it runs, but it also has no menu.

So I think there is something wrong in my environment.

BTW, thanks for all your hard work on gnome3. It must be a full-time job, and I really do appreciate what you do.

Cheers

Not sure but, maybe you are missing the new menus:
https://help.gnome.org/misc/release-notes/3.4/index.html.en#rnusers.application-menus

I also missed menu bars in some apps when I first seen it ;) probably because current situation is a bit inconsistent between applications :S
