octave doesnt compile with gcc 3.1 RedHat's Limbo beta has a patch to compile it with gcc 3.1... It should probably be applied to gentoo's version too...

yeah, we _NEED_ the newer "beta" octave in portage. this current version is horribly old.
added octave-2.1.36 into portage.
