Does it show anything interesting when you start it from a shell?

Unfortuanately, no.

is all that is displayed.

mail-client/thunderbird-24.0-r1 displays a bit more

Just check the postinst message from the ebuild for any actions I might have missed. Found advice to
'rm \${HOME}/.thunderbird/*/extensions.sqlite'
however
'ls \${HOME}/.thunderbird/*/extensions.sqlite'
responds
'ls: cannot access /home/norman/.thunderbird/*/extensions.sqlite: No such file or directory'

You will still need to file a backtrace if we are even to begin to understand why it is failing to start on your system.

I guess you mean something like 'strace -f thunderbird'.
I've considered that but I'm concerned regarding the redaction required to the resulting file before submission. Suggestions regarding what might be wise to redact would be helpful.

If you are worried about it, you can submit the log via mozilla@gentoo.org and we will review it privately.

In an attempt to investigate further I copied the rootfs and email folders to another host, upgraded thunderbird using the bin-pkg created earlier, disconnected the network and ran thunderbird from the shell. It loaded and displayed the GUI without error. On close examination of the original system it became apparent that the rootfs media was suffering data corruptions. I have now recovered the rootfs from a backup onto different media and upgraded thunderbird successfully. Thank you all for your help.
