The openxml USE flag for abiword is disabled by default and must be enabled in order for .docx support which is (unfortunately) an extremely common document format. Would it be possible to rename this USE flag to docx or change the description that appears for 'equery u abiword' to provide more information?
Renaming to docx would prevent any other package providing openxml specific support to use the same USE flag so I don't think this is a good idea. Admittedly the description of the USE-flag is not really helpful for people who don't know openxml is the MS equivalent of opendocument. There is one thing that might fix your problem, in abiword-3, it seems the extra-requirement on boost was removed, so maybe the USE-flag could be dropped and the plugin enabled by default.
