Description John L. Poole 2013-11-07 15:59:23 UTC
gcc fails to build

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge sys-devel/gcc

Actual Results:
/bin/sh: line 1: 12151 Killed build/genattrtab /var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/gcc-4.7.3-r1/work/gcc-4.7.3/gcc/config/i386/i386.md insn-conditions.md > tmp-attrtab.c
make[3]: *** [s-attrtab] Error 137

Expected Results:
successful build

This update was on a Gentoo image prepared for XEN in earlier 2013. I was performing an "emerge --update --newuse --deep world" and sys-devel/binutils failed to build. So I thought I would try upgrading gcc first. Here's my update manifest:

localhost ~ # emerge --update --newuse --deep world -p

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

I'll be attaching the "complete build log" momentarily.

The file "...work/build/gcc-build-logs.tar.bz2" is 39 MBs, should that be attached to this bug-- that's an awfully large file. Is there a place where it can be staged temporarily?

for posterity, the image is gentoo.2013-01.x86-64.20130102.img.tar.bz2 from http://www.stacklet.com/downloads/images/lister/Gentoo/2013-06/x86-64
Comment 4 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-11-08 16:15:55 UTC
You ran out of RAM. Install more or try some of the usual workarounds (remove -pipe from C*FLAGS, for instance).
Comment 5 John L. Poole 2013-11-08 16:52:13 UTC
Thank you.

I had 512 RAM allocated in the XEN configuration file (this is my first foray into XEN) and the Gentoo build was my first "guest" image; I altered the RAM to 4096 and it compiled.

Is there something in the logs that indicate exceeding the memory, or is sudden death without any indication when memory is set low something one just learns as a symptom?
Comment 6 John L. Poole 2013-11-08 18:15:07 UTC
my most recent entry above mistakenly said GCC compiled when, in fact, binutils had successfully compiled (I was adding a comment here thinking this bug was Bug #490696). I noted the confusion in Bug #490696 and indicated therein that I was in the processing of compiling GCC.

I can now declare that GCC has compiled successfully. Thank you, again.
