After updating version 2.20.13, I started to get a black screen with random trash when trying to use Xv. Tried to use mplayer in OpenGL mode and it just segfaults. Then noticed every OpenGL app is behaving the same. Reverted back to 2.20.13 and everything is fine. Can you try 2.99.905 too? Do you get errors in dmesg or Xorg.0.log when playing videos in mplayer using xv or opengl output?
I think dmesg is ok but need to check. I had to revert back not just the drivers but also other packages: 1383488633: ::: completed emerge (1 of 5) x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.40 to / 1383488663: ::: completed emerge (2 of 5) x11-proto/inputproto-2.2 to / 1383488691: ::: completed emerge (3 of 5) x11-proto/dri2proto-2.6 to / 1383488717: ::: completed emerge (4 of 5) x11-proto/randrproto-1.3.2 to / 1383489707: ::: completed emerge (5 of 5) media-libs/mesa-9.0.1 to / These have been stable. I'll post back when I find a bit to install the new ones and get more debug info.
I can confirm that similar strangeness is happening on my platform as well, and going back to 2.20.13 also fixed the problem. I saw small blocks scattered across the window that looked like holes from a card-punch machine, only black. This happened when scrolling content within the window, and the black squares would disappear when moving focus from one window to another. I tried this both with a local instance of firefox, and remotely from another system (to make sure it wasn't just a problem with a local application). Hardware here is Core i7-3540M / Dell Latitude E6230. Here is the obligatory emerge --info, followed by lspci -v (which may help with hardware ID if needed): Portage 2.2.7 (default/linux/amd64/13.0, gcc-4.7.3, glibc-2.16.0, 3.10.17-gentoo x86_64) Tested with 2.99.905, and I see the same problem as with 2.21.15. No errors seen in Xorg.0.log either. Please let me know if you'd like a copy of that log file (I will keep a copy around).
I think it's very likely this is fixed in a new version of the driver. If it's not, please file a bug upstream at bugs.freedesktop.org. We're not prepared to fix driver issues that aren't fixed upstream.
