Description Marc Joliet 2013-10-18 18:39:02 UTC
app-shells/fish has a tool "fish_update_completions" for generating completions from man pages. However, it currently only supports uncompressed and gzip compressed man pages. I patched the responsible python program to additionally support bzip2, lzma and xz, which has been merged upstream (see $URL).

As to the required changes to the ebuild, I tried my hand in my personal overlay: http://sourceforge.net/p/mjolietoverlay/code/ci/master/tree/app-shells/fish/. The changes relative to the in-tree ebuild are:

- add lzma and xz USE flags, which must both be (de-)activated together, since the lzma module cannot support only one or the other
- additional python dependencies (needed in the in-tree ebuild, too, actually), handled via the python-r1 eclass
- application of the upstream accepted patch (unconditionally, since bzip2 support is also added)
- revert to ~arch, since backports-lzma is still ~arch

I'm not entirely sure about the dependency to backports-lzma. I'm honestly confused why the backports-lzma ebuild supports Python 3.3, since that version includes the lzma module already, and the ChangeLog does not say, which is why fish only depends on it if Python <=3.2 is required.

Since PORTAGE_COMPRESS defaults to bzip2, this should be interesting to Gentoo users using the FISH.

Reproducible: Always

(NOTE: this is with the in-tree version of fish)

This is fixed in fish-2.1.0 which hopefully will enter portage soon ;)
Comment 2 Lars Wendler (Polynomial-C) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-11-04 09:51:31 UTC
fish-2.1.0 is now in portage.

That's great, but you completely missed the dependency changes (a package that ships Python scripts had better depend on Python) and the new USE flags (xz and lzma support are optional, after all).

Also, nobody addressed my question on why backports-lzma supports python-3.3 (again: Python 3.3 already has an lzma module, that's what backports-lzma backported from, after all). Although I suppose I really should have just opened a separate bug about that.

Oh well, I guess I'll just open some new bugs when I get back home :-/ .
