I am tired and fucking annoyed as this problem has been going round the dicussion forums and no one from Gentoo seems to have bothered their ass to make any comment.

If this is the way you guys work, no wonder Bill Gates has no competition out there!!!!

The problem occured last Monday when I tried to install gentoo for the first time after downloading a cd iso file over last weekend. I have an ISDN line and 668 MB takes a lifetime to to download. SO DONT TELL ME TO DOWNLOAD ANOTHER IMAGE FILE!!!

The problem is as follows.

I have now been able to get emerge genkernel to run, however it now fails as it did earlier on in the week when trying to download:

genkernel-3.0.1_rc1.tar.bz2

It tries at:
gentoo.oraganstate.edu and gets an ERROR 404 Not Found

then

distro.ibiblio.org and gets ERROR 404 Not Found

then dev.gentoo.org and gets ERROR 403 Forbidden.

What are you guys providing the os trying to do, make us try and compile it manually.

PLEASE CAN YOU MAKE THE FILE AVAILABLE DO THAT emerge genkernel will.

I assume that someone has fucked up with the latest LiveCD.

I have a dialup line using ISDN and downloading a 668MB file to crate the LiveCD is some task. I will not be doing it again!!

Can one of you gentoo people start answering some of these questions as there seems to be amny people having similar problems.

If you want your OS to knock Bill Gates on the head, you better start talking to your potential users otherwise you are just as bad as Microsoft. You complaint that MS try and force their OS on people, at least it can install.

CAN SONEONE FROM GENTOO START HELPING US HERE!!!

Neil

I then recieved this comment, which although well intended offers no solution, just more questions.

My system is showing that 302 is the newest genkernel. Why aren't you using that?

Code:

Aurora root # emerge -p genkernel

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

OKAY

Fine, he has version 3.0.2a. I downloaded my file last weekend, surly I had the latest version? MAYBE YOU DONT KEEP YOUR MIRROR SITES UP TO DATE (US and European sites????)

I then responded with:

Ok, How do I get it to use version 3.0.2a instead of 3.0.1?

I downloaded the Live CD files last weekend. It came down with version 3.0.1

How do I force it to use version 3.0.2a?

Thanks for the help.

Neil

AND

It still goes not get around the fact that I downloaded the files less than a week ago and the version 3.0.1 does not appear to be on any of the servers.

Where the fuck can I get it????????????

If this is how you people work, thenit is no wonder Bill Gates has everyone by the balls.

Neil

No is this a bug in the version I have if so, what can I do about it. If you want me to download another iso image, forget it. Microsoft rules the world in that case.

Is it possible that you extracted a portage-snapshot from the 2004.0-CD? If yes, it's totally clear what is happening. By the time the snapshot was made the genkernel-version you are missing was the most up-to-date version.

You have to run emerge sync the fresh-up your local portage tree. Then portage will stick with the newest genkernel Version.

P.S.: Now matter how annoyed you are by a problem, please don't use a language like you did in this bugreport here. After reading the first lines of it I was tempted to stop reading it and simply close it. ;)

Thanks for the comment, I will run the sync and see where we get to.

Sorry for the way I opened up the bug report.

Benjamin Judas 2004-04-24 03:44 PST, when you say

'You have to run emerge sync the fresh-up your local portage tree.'

what exact command line should I enter to do so?

-dave
ps I'm having the precise problem the bug describes, and I used the 2004.0 image as you guessed.
Comment 5 Neil Fox 2004-04-28 10:50:59 UTC
I just ran the:

emerge sync

(See section 6 Installing the Gentoo Base System. Section 6a under Optional:Updating Portage.)

and that seemed to correct the problem.
