Description Adam Bolte 2004-04-23 08:52:20 UTC
Upon booting an OS in VMware-3.2.1, I get the error message:

Failed to set virtual terminal mode for /dev/tty8: Operation not permitted
Unable to allocate virtual terminal for full-screen VGA.
Full-screen VGA will not be available.

If I click on the Full Screen button when using the client OS, I get another pop-up box:

Could not allocate virtual terminal for full-screen VGA.
Cannot switch to full-screen mode.

This doesn't seem possible. /dev/tty8 is a system link to /dev/vc/8, which has permissions crw-rw----, where group is tty and I am in that group. Changing permissions using chmod o+rw /dev/vc/8 doesn't make any difference (as others have also experienced). Furthermore, this used to work. I believe it was just the new updated version that has broken this, but it could also possibly be due to the newer version of X. I have had this problem for so long I can't recall exactly what triggered it.

Switching between xfree-drm and ati-drivers doesn't seem to make any difference.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Execute vmware
2. Load client OS
3. Observe error pop-up box

Actual Results:
I got the previously-mentioned error pop-up box informing me that there was a
permission problem, even when there was no permission problem. It stated that
full-screen mode would be unavailable, and indeed it wasn't.

Expected Results:
Not displayed the error, and (more importantly) full-screen should have worked.

I do run a GNOME desktop, but I'm sure that's not relevant.

Ouch. I'll have to see what I can do about this, but unfortunately, I don't think I have a copy of my old 3.x license around anymore.

Can you try 3.2.1.2242-r2 and see if this fixes this problem?

REOPEN if you have more information.
