Description Robert Cabrera 2013-10-10 22:32:16 UTC
I updated my ~amd64 laptop to KDE-4.11.2 last night. After initializing it I immediately noticed that the battery monitoring / power management widget in the system tray was no longer reporting the status of my battery. It's now stuck at 0% charge even though my battery is fully charged. It does show correctly whether it's plugged in or not and correctly lists the specifics of the battery itself, including the remaining capacity (60% it's five years old), vendor (Sanyo), and Model (DELL: F51268), which are new features in this version of the widget.

The problem is serious because KDE power management now thinks my laptop battery has no charge, so shortly after unplugging, a warning flashes on screen then the system goes into hibernation (which is the correct action if the battery was actually at this level of discharge). I've tried with both of my batteries with the same results.

This is a critical issue for me, as it makes my laptop not very portable. It works as expected while plugged in, but renders it useless while on battery.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot into KDE battery shows O% in the widget.
2. Unplug charger
3. laptop goes into hibernation.
Actual Results:
See above

Expected Results:
Accurate reading of battery charge as in previous versions of KDE and being able to use my laptop as a portable computing device.

Please report this to upstream and link here back.
Comment 2 Robert Cabrera 2013-10-17 20:45:15 UTC
I'm sorry I haven't posted back sooner, but due to the age (6 years old) and speed (or lack of it) of my laptop it's taken me awhile to try on my own to resolve this issue.

I've spent the last several days recompiling my entire system, which finally completed about an hour ago. I can say now with certainty that this issue was not a KDE bug. Upon rebooting after the system rebuild the issue is fixed and no longer manifesting itself.

I don't know what the exactly caused it, but the system rebuild fixed it. Perhaps it was because I haven't done one in well over a year and there were mix-matched binaries and libraries from several major updates during that time? I don't know for sure, but since I no longer have the issue I'm marking this report solved and ask you folks to close it.

Thanks for the help
