Description Jason Bucata 2013-10-10 14:30:42 UTC
I got the GLSA email that dev-python/setuptools had a security hole. I checked and was surprised that my installed version was an old vulnerable version. I'd just done an emerge -uD world recently.

I tried emerge --depclean to see if this package was even needed, and nothing was marked as purged. I tried to uninstall it, but I did what the emerge command said and checked for dependencies on setuptools, and it found a handful of Python packages.

So why isn't this package automatically upgraded by emerge -uD world???

How can I check for other packages that are installed on my system but may be out of date (and thus have security holes or other bugs) because emerge is skipping them unless I upgrade them directly?

Please post your output for `equery d dev-python/setuptools'.

Any chance that what you were looking for was '--with-bdeps y' ?
Comment 5 Jason Bucata 2013-10-11 00:27:08 UTC
Indeed, the --with-bdeps helps. :)

I just checked the Handbook and it does mention that --with-bdeps should be used on occasion to catch build-time-only dependencies. That must not have been there in the Handbook back when I first installed Gentoo (nigh on 8 years ago).

Hmm. Well, maybe I'm the only one with this problem, in which case I should keep quiet. :) But if there are other long-time users who don't know that they should be doing this periodically, maybe there should be a Portage news item to broadcast that this particular security hole is out there, and unless you take extra steps, you won't get this fix automatically?
