I use sys-fs/aufs3 with kernel-patch USE enabled together with sys-kernel/gentoo-sources (-build -deblob -symlink) kernel (up to 3.10.7-r1) for portage tree.
Extending single kernel compatibility (see bug #438784)
Each kernel update requires much attention and manual actions.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Now I must do following:
Actual Results:  
1. Install new kernel.
2. Fix /usr/src/linux symlink (I still prefer to do it manually)
3. Configure new kernel (at least copy existing config and run make oldconfig).
4. make modules_prepare
5. Only here I can patch kernel source tree with aufs3 patch (emerge -1 aufs3), on build without it kernel aufs module fails.
6. Now, I can build kernel and boot with it.

Expected Results:  
In my case (-build -symlink) I expect portage to make a check on installed packages with kernel-patch USE enabled, if present — echo remind from list above.
Maybe, it will be better to patch kernel sources basing not on standard build path (/usr/src/linux), but on kernel install path (for 3.10.7-r1 — /usr/src/linux-3.10.7-gentoo-r1/).

If 'symlink' USE for kernel package enabled — portage should after correcting buildpath symlink automatically rebuild package(s) with kernel-patch USE enabled.

If 'build' USE enabled, portage should prior to kernel build patch its sources (rebuild packages with kernel-patch USE enabled).

PLease use aufs-sources. Those are aufs3 + gentoo-sources.

It is a solution for particular issue of aufs3-support patch.

But in this bug report it's used as example (and currently the only patch, applayed by title USE flag).
If 'kernel-patch' USE flag exist, how it should be handled in ideal.

Here is nothing more that I can do.

To use sys-fs/aufs3, you will always need

1. fresh kernel sources
2. /usr/src/linux needs to point there (as for all other module ebuilds)
3. rebuild the kernel after the aufs3 patches were applied.

everything else is outside my maintainership.

How are you going to translate step 3 from your actual to your expected results?

Without a proper .config present, I think this whole idea doesn't really work...

This step will always be outside the portage space.

Okay, then we will close this bug. Current aufs-sources support vanilla+aufs3 and gentoo-sources+aufs3. Everything else will need to have some user intervention.
