Description Juergen Rose 2013-09-27 17:46:44 UTC
Even 'emerge -vuND --backtrack=30 world' fails with:

root@wildcat:/root(11)# emerge -vuND --backtrack=30 world
...
[ebuild     U  ] sci-libs/netcdf-4.3.0::gentoo [4.1.3::x-portage] USE="dap* doc examples%* hdf%* hdf5 mpi%* szip%* tools%* -static-libs {-test%} (-cxx%*) (-fortran%*)" 0 kB
...

!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

sci-libs/netcdf:0

  (sci-libs/netcdf-4.3.0::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
    (no parents that aren't satisfied by other packages in this slot)

  (sci-libs/netcdf-4.1.3::x-portage, installed) pulled in by
    ~sci-libs/netcdf-4.1.3[cxx,hdf5] required by (sci-visualization/paraview-4.0.1-r1::gentoo, installed)

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
...
root@wildcat:/root(12)#

I think, that I can solve this issue by masking >sci-libs/netcdf-4.1.3. But I have the feeling, that in the last time there is a cumulation of these slot conflicts, which are not managed by emerge. In the past emerge was complaining about this issue, but did not stop to emerge the rest of the world.
Comment 1 Tom Wijsman (TomWij) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-09-27 21:27:52 UTC
Can we please see the complete output of that? Please add --tree --unordered-display that clarifies what is pulling in what.

Can you also comment with the output of `emerge --info`?

Please note that one of the slot conflict packages is from your local overlay; so, you might be able to resolve this in that place (perhaps by removing it).

I reach this computer (wildcat) probably again at monday. But here I have a similar problem on the next system:

root@condor:/root(21)# emerge --update --newuse --deep --with-bdeps=y @world

Output of 'emerge --update --newuse --deep --with-bdeps=y --tree --unordered-display @world'
Comment 4 Juergen Rose 2013-09-30 07:30:30 UTC
The original problem at "wildcat" is no more visible. Since friday 'emerge --sync && emerge -uvDN --keep-going' was run by cron daemon twice. But there is now a now slot conflict with dev-util/mdds. I will file a separate bug for this.
Comment 5 Tom Wijsman (TomWij) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-10-07 18:06:56 UTC
Okay, you want to package.mask >=dev-util/mdds-0.8.2 until the reverse dependencies allow newer versions; if you are running stable, this might be obtainable by using package.accept_keywords on the reverse dependencies.

Relevant parts of the output:

[nomerge       ] app-office/libreoffice-4.1.2.2
[ebuild  rR    ]  dev-libs/liborcus-0.5.1
[ebuild  r  U  ]   dev-util/mdds-0.9.0 [0.8.1]
[nomerge       ]   dev-libs/libixion-0.5.0
[ebuild  rR    ]    dev-util/mdds-0.8.1

=dev-util/mdds-0.8*:= required by (app-office/libreoffice-4.1.2.2::gentoo)
>=dev-util/mdds-0.7.1:0/0.8.1= required by (dev-libs/libixion-0.5.0::gentoo)

I don't see a real bug here, just conflicting choices; it'll resolve itself in the future as new versions come (or you make them available), I guess...
