Sounds like a missing kernel modules. Attach lsmod output, /etc/modules.conf, lsmod and the what sound driver you have.(verify against lsmod)

I have this problem intermetintly as well with drivers >0.9.8 with my SB Live!... or atleast a related problem. I have not been able to reproduce it deterministically. Can you try a 2.6.2 kernel (since it has 0.9.8 drivers) or a 2.4 kernel with 0.9.8? My problem presents itself after playing an AC3 stream through the digital out SPDIF. Sometimes after doing that, it would not switch back to PCM. Even removing, reloading the drivers did not fix the problem. Analog audio out worked fine, however. My board is 'Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 8)'. Can you please create a bug report upstream on alsa's bug tracker and report the bug number back here? Maybe together we can help them fix this...
