Please try using a stable gcc. I am unable to reproduce this.

Thanks, but I get nearly the same error using gcc 4.6.3 (Gentoo 4.6.3 p1.11, pie-0.5.2). pg_basebackup.o: In function `BaseBackup': pg_basebackup.c:(.text+0x18d9): undefined reference to `tarCreateHeader' pg_basebackup.c:(.text+0x1aa1): undefined reference to `escape_single_quotes_ascii' However, after some trial and error, I was able to "fix" the problem by setting USE="-xml", which then leads to a successful installation. Since I don't need XML support, this solution is fine for my needs.
I still can't reproduce this issue. Which version of dev-libs/libxml2 and dev-libs/libxslt do you have installed?
