Description Marc Joliet 2013-09-08 17:11:15 UTC
sys-apps/mount-gtk fails during the configure phase, apparently because it does not explicitly set the C++ standard to be used (which must either be -std=c++0x or -std=c++11), so that g++ defaults to C++98, which doesn't support the feature being tested. A snippet from the config.log:

configure:8494: result: yes
configure:8505: checking for C++11 range-for support
configure:8532: x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-g++ -c -O2 -march=native -pipe -fexceptions -frtti -fsigned-char -fno-check-new -pthread  conftest.cpp >&5
conftest.cpp: In function 'int main()':
conftest.cpp:36:18: error: ISO C++ forbids declaration of 'elt' with no type [-fpermissive]
conftest.cpp:36:23: error: range-based-for loops are not allowed in C++98 mode

I also saw some configure tests that check for -std=c++11/c++0x support, but they were not run before the error, so maybe the test order is just wrong? I don't know anything about autoconf myself, so I can't say.

There's also a patch at $URL that I haven't tested.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge -1 mount-gtk (after unmasking the necessary deps)
Actual Results:
emerge fails during the configure phase.

Expected Results:
emerge succeeds

emerge --info mount-gtk

It seems somebody didn't thought things through deeply enough.

AC_CHECK_COMPILERS runs all the required checks...as long CXXFLAGS aren't set.
:sigh:

The patch referenced is both OK *and* a bit pointless for this reason.

What does "if gcc is installed, gcc >= 4.6 required" mean in the summary?
The user already had gcc-4.6 as per `emerge --info` in Comment #0

That's what configure prints out.

acinclude.m4:    AC_MSG_ERROR([compiler does not support C++11 range-for expressions - if gcc is installed, gcc >= 4.6 required])

conftest.cpp: In function 'int main()':
conftest.cpp:36:12: warning: 'auto' will change meaning in C++0x; please remove it [-Wc++0x-compat]
conftest.cpp:36:18: error: ISO C++ forbids declaration of 'elt' with no type [-fpermissive]
conftest.cpp:36:23: error: range-based-for loops are not allowed in C++98 mode

The real reason is one of the above two...

ahok, thanks, didn't realize it was the actual message. :/

In light of above: AC_CHECK_COMPILERS I referred to is a private macro of this package (in acinclude.m4, IIRC), not (as the name could suggest) an externally provided one.
Comment 8 Samuli Suominen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-06-22 10:15:15 UTC
added the patch from http://sourceforge.net/p/mount-gtk/discussion/910829/thread/fd0c210d/ with ax_check_compile_flag.m4 to package's m4/ directory from autoconf-archive

so now -std=c++11 is only added to CXXFLAGS when it's supported by the compiler

all of this stems from the package's acinclude.m4 being broken in a way that environment CXXFLAGS override everything acinclude.m4 tries to add, and to workaround the broken behavior, i've used append-cxxflags that always added the -std=c++11 to CXXFLAGS, which was a stupid idea :/

hopefully it's solved for you now:
