* ERROR: media-gfx/grub-splashes-20091109::gentoo failed (setup phase):
 * //boot/grub does not exist, please make sure you have /boot mounted
grub2's grub directory is /boot/grub2, i dont have /boot/grub.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
grub2 only system, emerge grub-splashes ????  profit!

>=sys-boot/grub-2.00_p5107-r1 uses /boot/grub instead of /boot/grub2.
Comment 2 Jason Mours 2013-10-10 19:12:05 UTC
I can confirm & as my workaround - I wiped my boot drive, remounted as /boot, grub2-install /dev/sd{drive_} , copy kernels and intramfs back over, then grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg. New initialization with grub2-install puts /boot/grub, not /boot/grub2 ... then with /boot mounted emerge grub-splashes.

I just can't get my framebuffer to work with grub2 yet...

this was reported before that, im not sure if its resolved or not, but as is invalidated by means of system changing. /boot/grub2 drove me nuts as it was broken in other areas also. ill mark as resolved since the original reporting issue of paths has been resolved.
