Description Mike Nerone 2013-09-06 10:16:04 UTC
After updating to sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-3.10.7 (system model name is "AMD E-450 APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics"), at boot there's a 60-second timeout followed by this message:

radeon 0000:00:01.0: radeon_uvd: Can't load firmware "radeon/SUMO_uvd.bin"

x11-drivers/radeon-ucode-20130626 is installed and that file is present at /lib/firmware/radeon/SUMO_uvd.bin (and booting with the 3.8.13-gentoo kernel doesn't exhibit this problem).

BTW, in case it matters, I do *not* use an initrd/initramfs (neither before nor after the update).
Comment 3 Tom Wijsman (TomWij) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-09-13 17:46:49 UTC
Can you check the firmware settings under "Device Drivers > Generic Driver Options" to see if you can change something there to get things to work (like for instance building the firmware in the kernel). Make sure you have followed the Radeon wiki which explains things like this.

http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Radeon

As you can see the presence is /lib/firmware means nothing; it has to be made available to the kernel in one or another way for it to find it.

If you build Radeon built-in, then it either expects the firmware to be present in init{ramfs,rd} or built-in into the kernel, because it has no access to / at that time; if you build it is as a module, it will be able to load after / has been mounted.

(PS: I'm not sure Radeon as a module would work without firmware in kernel)

Likely it sounds as Radeon and the other firmware files are built-in whereas SUMO_uvd.bin is not; uvd has been recently added, so it needs to be added to the line which you have added in the past (according to the above Radeon wiki page).

So, long story short; I think you can fix things by adding radeon/SUMO_uvd.bin to CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE="" and make sure CONFIG_FIRMWARE_IN_KERNEL is enabled.

Please let us know if that fixes it or whether it is still problematic.

Thanks, TomWij!

You pointed me right to the problem. I don't *recall* ever having to build firmware into the kernel before, but doing so did the trick, although the web page you linked is actually wrong. For my HD6320, the firmware files it lists fails, and by trial and error, I found the correct files to be:

radeon/PALM_me.bin radeon/PALM_pfp.bin radeon/SUMO_rlc.bin radeon/SUMO_uvd.bin

Thanks for your help. This bug is invalid.
