media-video/bino-1.4.2-r1 fails to build with VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia" with this error message:

/usr/lib64/libXext.so.6: could not read symbols: Invalid operation

With VIDEO_CARDS="" it builds correctly.

Reproducible: Always

# eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
  [1] nvidia
  [2] xorg-x11 *

This is necessary since this is a notebook with an NVIDIA Optimus card running with bumblebee and nvidia-drivers. So the primary card is the Intel video card.

My full VIDEO_CARDS is:
VIDEO_CARDS="i965 intel nvidia"
Comment 4 Heiko Baums 2013-09-03 17:08:29 UTC
After looking at the ebuild I doubt that it makes sense to apply all those NVIDIA specific .configure options to Bino in case of an NVIDIA Optimus card, since the primary card is the CPU internal Intel video card, and the NVIDIA card is only a helper card for the 3D rendering.

So it would probably be best if VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia" resp. USE="video_cards_nvidia" would only be applied in the ebuild if nvidia is the only card in VIDEO_CARDS. This means it would probably be the best if the ebuild would additionally check if there's no "intel" in VIDEO_CARDS, too, or however this can be done better.

The NVIDIA Optimus cards, btw., don't have a direct connection to the monitor and can only be used in conjunction with the Intel card (via VirtualGL). So those NVIDIA specific optimizations most likely wouldn't work anyway like Xorg can't be started directly (by /etc/init.d/xdm) with the nvidia driver itself.

I don't know why it didn't come to my mind earlier. For me this can be fixed by adding "media-video/bino -video_cards_nvidia" to package.mask, because of the NVIDIA Optimus card. So you can more or less ignore my last comment.

But I don't know if this bug is only related to those NVIDIA Optimus cards or to all NVIDIA cards.

Of course I meant package.use.

Why? Bug #499772 is the duplicate of this bug. The older bug report is usually the duplicate. Let's the devs decide.

The newer bug report is, of course, the duplicate.
Comment 10 PhobosK 2014-02-15 15:28:19 UTC
:) I am not here to argue ;)

Generally speaking the bug that has more solutions and info should stay as main bug.
bug #499772 has some solution/patch (though it is not working)

But it actually doesn't matter because the new ebuild of v1.4.4 fixes all and both bugs should be closed as fixed soon....

Please try the new ebuild and give a feedback if it works for you :)

Thanks
