Description Andrew Lomakin 2004-04-18 23:06:54 UTC
When i try to install gentoo linux 2004.0 my compaq evo n610c randomly powers off. it happens not regarding whether it is on batteries or on AC.
Tried using all possible boot option configurations, gentoo-nofb kernel, -noacpi and other switches - doesn't help. Issue happens all the time..for example now i got to bootstrap phase, and it shuts down while compiling gcc..but same thing can happen while `emerge sync`'ing... all installation is done as described in manuals. laptop is new, latest bios patch and firmware updates are installed. latest version of portage and of livecd is used. There are no problems installing other linux versions: redhat, slackware, freebsd, mandrake. no problems under winXP ...assuming it's not hardware.

What can be the problem?
Thank you

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot from live cd
2. Mount partitions, set other options
3. Emerge sync (and here we can crash)
4. if we don't crash we do bootstrapping...and this is the place where we crash always

Actual Results:
Notebook shuts down.
P.S. Interesting sign
After shutting down it blinks with the charge led a couple of times. it is
impossible to turn it on while it blinks, when it stops blinking, the system
can be powered on again and the whole things go on again

Expected Results:
work!!!

bug happens on the other compaq evo n610c too
compaq evo n610c is: pentium 4 2.0 g ati radeon 7500m intel ac 97 controller,
256 meg ddr 266 ram, 30 gb ata100 4200 rpm ibm harddrive

Offering another data point and hoping to further dispel any concerns that this may be a point problem...

I've also encountered this problem on my n610c. I was installing 2004.1 and ALWAYS encountered the problem during the 'emerge sync' before bootstrapping.

Also interestings: since this looked suspiciously like an overheat problem, I started paying attention to the system fans during install. I noticed the fans went off sometime during boot off the LiveCD, or shortly thereafter. They never came on again, which is unusual for this system as it tends to run EXTREMELY hot.

it IS an overheat problem
i used noacpi option to boot the kernel, and set fans to `always on when on AC power in BIOS`
without noacpi option system overrides this bios setting and turns the fans off
with noacpi option fans go wild, and everything looks goot through the install
after install no problems spotted: fans go up and down whenever system feels she's too hot.

Yeah, I tried that as well: change the BIOS setting, use the boot option. Maybe the fact that the 2004.1 LiveCD wasn't listing noacpi as a boot option means it wasn't actually an option and me specifying it had absolutely no affect?

Anyway, I ended up figuring out that I could load some ACPI kernel modules to get the fan going at least enough to get the job done:

  modprobe fan
  modprobe ac
  modprobe asus_acpi
  modprobe processor
  modprobe thermal
  modprobe
