I am currently testing gnome-shell-3.8 and often the UI completely freezes, mouse pointer cannot be moved and I cannot switch to other terminals. Therefore I need to perform a cold reboot to regain access to the machine. This bug seems to occur often (but not always) when switching console (via crtl+alt+f1 etc) and then switching back to gnome-shell. Any hints on how to debug this? Using the xorg stable list from bug #475480 Some versions, please let me know if you need more information. x11-base/xorg-server-1.14.2 was built with the following: USE="ipv6 kdrive nptl suid udev This is useless without any log: please review journalctl output, dmesg, /var/log/Xorg.0.log. Also provide your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and tell us what driver uses your card. Also try updating "mesa" to newer versions and the same with "intel" driver (if you are using that one, as I see you have an intel i7)
Also try on a new created user account, also tell us what kernel are you using (for framebuffer and modesetting) and trying some major versions (3.9, 3.10...)

If the freeze happens, do Magic SysRq, ping, ssh still work? If it is really the X server that freezes (and not clutter or a kernel panic occurs), Xorg.0.log and dmesg may give more information.

I did not have a second machine when this happend today but I will try network access the next time this occurs.
(In reply to Pacho Ramos from comment #1) > This is useless without any log: please review journalctl output, dmesg, > /var/log/Xorg.0.log. I cannot see anything suspicious in journalctl output, dmesg or Xorg.0.log but as already mentioned I will inspect this issue in detail over the network when it happens again.

Also test Xorg.0.log.old and co. Does this occurs when using nouveau or intel driver? (I guess you are using bumblebee for switching between them)
> Also test Xorg.0.log.old and co. Also nothing relevant. > Does this occurs when using nouveau or intel driver? (I guess you are using > bumblebee for switching between them) I am not using bumblebee but prime to switch between them for certain applications, vga_switcheroo to power nvidia on/off. I now turned off the nvidia chip in bios, maybe this will help.
(In reply to Fabian Köster from comment #4) > I will update the drivers, mesa and see if it changes things. I did this but the bug appeared again with the following configuration: media-libs/mesa-9.2.0_rc2 was built with the following: USE="classic egl gallium gles2 llvm nptl -bindist -debug -gbm -gles1 -opencl -openvg -osmesa -pax_kernel -pic -r600-llvm-compiler (-selinux) -vdpau -wayland -xa -xorg -xvmc" PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="python2_7 -python2_6" PYTHON_TARGETS="python2_7 -python2_6" VIDEO_CARDS="intel nouveau -freedreno -i915 -i965 -ilo -r100 -r200 -r300 -r600 -radeon -radeonsi -vmware" x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.21.15 was built with the following: USE="dri sna udev -glamor -uxa -xvmc" LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1 -Wl,--as-needed -Wl,-z,lazy" x11-drivers/xf86-video-nouveau-1.0.9 was built with the following: USE="" LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1 -Wl,--as-needed -Wl,-z,lazy"
(In reply to Fabian Köster from comment #9) > I now turned off the nvidia chip in bios, maybe this will help. This seems to help, no crash or freeze at all with nvidia graphics disabled in bios, so this seems to be caused by some nouveau-code, maybe same issue as #482682 ?
This bug seems to be gone probably after upgrading Kernel to current 3.12 release candidates. This new major Kernel version includes many changes for Optimus hardware.
