Description Mark Knecht 2013-08-24 19:41:09 UTC
Since the August stable KDE update I've been experiencing a greater than 2 minute delay logging into KDE using KDM. The login dialogs work fine, the dialog disappears immediately, and then I wait over 2 minutes before I get the KDE process graphics that shows a disk and other pictures before finally showing the big 'K' icon. Once KDE (or KDM) starts showing these graphics it all proceeds normally. The delay is between hitting enter for the password and the start of these graphics.

If I disable xdm and/or boot with gentoo=nox I can get into KDE without any delay using startx. I also emerged xfce4 as a test and it starts immediately from KDM.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
/etc/init.d/xdm start & login
Actual Results:
Takes over 2 minutes before I can use KDE. The following is what I see in /var/log/messages:

Comment 2 Mark Knecht 2013-08-30 00:35:58 UTC
At first glance appears similar but on my machine it's always a slightly longer than 2 minute delay and I not identified and problems with any applications once KDE gets started.
Comment 3 Mark Knecht 2013-08-30 12:45:20 UTC
The problem appears to be specific to my KDE configuration. I'm the only daily user on this system but I do have other user accounts. None of them have any delays when logging in so it appears that this latest rev of KDE is having trouble with only my older KDE configuration files. I haven't done it yet but I suspect that if I delete everything it will work fine.
Comment 4 Mark Knecht 2013-09-04 20:42:12 UTC
I'm going to mark this as resolved/invalid although I'll leave it to others to change the status if they see fit. This problem is somehow caused by newer NVidia drivers not handling multi-GPU setups like they did in times past. Don't ask me why it effects only KDM-based logins and nothing else on my system but it did.

To get around it all I did was comment out everything in xorg.conf that had to do with the second adapter card & 3rd monitor. Now I have to run with just 2 monitors instead of 3 but login is immediate.

I'll keep an old xorg.conf around if someone wants me to test something but for my immediate needs the problem is solved.
