Description Timo Rothenpieler 2013-08-17 14:52:45 UTC
Even after rebuilding both x264 and gst-plugins-x264, the plugin fails to load with the following output:

Could not load plugin file: Opening module failed: /usr/lib/gstreamer-1.0/libgstx264.so: undefined symbol: x264_levels

Checking the plugin .so with ldd shows that it's not linked to libx264, which it apperently should be.

I also tried the ~arch version of gst-plugins-x264, but it's exactly the same issue there.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge gst-plugins-x264
2. see that libgstx264.so is not linked to libx264.so
Actual Results:
libgstx264.so is not linked against libx264.so

Expected Results:
libgstx264.so should be linked against libx264.so

The answer lies in build log, but actually I've ran into this too, just didn't feel the need to file.

The problem lies in media-libs/x264 build system and seems to cover all version currently in portage (I've tested just 0.0.20111220 and 0.0.20130731).

The reason for the problem is:

pkg-config x264 --modversion
0.120.x
pkg-config x264 '>=' 0.120.0 ; echo $?
1

The solution would most likely be adjusting x264 ebuild to append '0' instead of 'x'.

$ pkg-config x264 --modversion
0.148.x
$ pkg-config x264 '>=' 0.120.0 ; echo $?
0
$ pkg-config --version
0.28

seems more like a pkg-config bug, or that 0.120.x < 0.120.0 for it; anyway, its fixed now

Not this just means it *works* now, not that it's fixed, cause it obviously isn't.

pkg-config version checks, it seems, were not meant to be used with version strings mixing letters and numbers.
