This is where bugs for this testing ISO should be sent.
Comment 1 Yennick Schepers 2004-04-17 16:54:39 UTC
I booted the LiveCD up with no problems. (nice)
After a few minutes loading, I was on the UT2004 menu.
Changed the settings to low (256MB DDR, AMD Athlon XP +1700, GeForce2 I hope that says enough.)

--> Deathmatch match:
The map didn't take very long to load and I could game without much lag.
Only thing what's missing is the scrollmouse support, this isn't configured in my X11 config, so it couldn't be used (I use the wheelmouse for changing weapons).

I was on a killingspree so it didn't take long for the game to end.

--> Onslaught match:
After a long load the intro finaly started, I click the mouse to skip it, again a minute loading and I'm off fragging.
When I open the side doors, it started to load again, screen was blank now (This is probably my RAM).

Then I pressed Control + backspace to shutdown X.
Got in console and typed "reboot".

Now I get a nice "Gentoo 2004.1" screen and there starts a progressbar.
Then it says type Control + D to go in maintenance (I was like WTF, but I didn't touch anything.)
And it rebooted.

Then I see another bug... I can't eject my cdrom drive after I use the CD. (This was anoying me cos like the most persons I've set CDROM as 2nd boot device.)
I changed my boot devices in BIOS and rebooted into Gentoo and there I was able to eject my cdrom.

Changing the title to match newest release.

Please test the new release available at my dev space...

not sure what changed between the two releases, but using the older 20040414 one, several things I noticed:
- cd spin-up lag really hurts the game, and using cdcache on the boot prompt didn't seem to help it.
- need to add more network drivers to hotplug's list, namely sk98lin.
- occassionally a client just gets booted with a message that the CD key is already in use or some such.
Comment 4 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-05-08 09:55:31 UTC
There are numerous changes between the releases. The kernel is one such change, so it could very well be that the driver is now loaded in the newer release. I'm not really sure how to go about adding more drivers to hotplug. I could re-snapshot and try using a more recent hotplug than the one from 040220 stable. I know that I didn't unmask the ~arch version, so that could be a possibility.

Also, cdcache does nothing. For one, you would need at *least* 1GB of RAM to pull it off. The game is about 500MB uncompressed. Also, I need to go back and fix the cdcache listing in the game to make it say docache instead. This was a catalyst bug and something I never fixed in anticipation for it being corrected in catalyst.

Perhaps I could use some more agressive hdparm settings on the CD to speed things up?

Is there any way you can test the newer CD, as there were several bugs in the older CD that have been remedied and I don't really need bug reports on the older one due to the differences such as kernel already being addressed.

i'll try the new one out on tuesday when i'm back at work.
all of our machines are 1GB+ on ram, with GigE.

the problem with the CD is that once the game is done loading up, the CD spins down, and then when it needs something (usually one of the time remaining annoucements like '2 minutes remain') it has to spin up again.

if you could stop it from spinning down at all, then it would go fine.

i'll try 'docache' as well.

OK. I have a new ISO up, so I wanted to revive this.

I have tested successfully on the following...

Pentium 4, 2.4b
512mb RAM
nvidia geforce ti 4200
(Full graphics)

Pentium 3, 766mhz
256mb RAM
nvidia geforce ti 200
(Medium Graphics)

I ran into problems using a USB mouse. So far I have been unable to get the mouse detected (Logitech Optical Wheel Mouse). Probably a lack of kernel configuration? It isn't giving any output to /dev/input/mice nor is the red track light activated.

As far as performance the bootup is quick enough, though it does take a bit longer then normal to load the actual game once in flux, especially on the P3 machine. Once running though, both machines performed almost normally while playing.

Some suggested includes:
IRC Client (XChat?)
Teamspeak Client
Music Player (XMMS?)
A nice Gentoo or game related wallpaper :)

runs flawlessly including sound and all (system: Shuttle XPC XN25G, Athlon XP 2400+, 512 MB Ram and 40xCD-Rom)
Screen flickering when starting Fluxbox (isn't it Fluxbox?), but I didn't care.

If you are willing to buy the game after quiting the demo you are out of luck because there's no working browser.

Usefull would be an automatically ejected disk when shutting down or rebooting (a la Knoppix)

I'm working on a new GameCD and should have one out shortly...

Well, after speaking with Epic, we don't have permission to redistribute their IP in a modified form and they don't think it would be worth the expense of a lawyer to give us explicit license to do so. This bug is CLOSED... =[
