Description Thibaud CANALE 2013-08-07 14:08:51 UTC
I noticed today an old processus named "supervising syslog-ng", from a previous version of syslog-ng (before I did the update at 2013-07-07 to the version 3.4.2, a month ago) were still "alive" and was spamming my file /var/log/kern.log (were syslog-ng save messages related to the kernel) with a lot of lines like
2013-08-07T15:34:31+02:00 cyborg kernel: syslog-ng[1980]: segfault at 44d8 ip 00007f6d78d96cd3 sp 00007fffe2591dd0 error 4 in libsyslog-ng.so.0.0.0 (deleted)[7f6d78d5e000+67000]

(you can see this bug in this forum too http://gentoo.2317880.n4.nabble.com/syslog-ng-segfaults-td265406.html)

Every 12 hours (based of my configuration file) I was saving the log statistics, I was about 7388671 messages in kern.log (processed='destination(kern)=7388671') every 12 hours.

To suppress this problem, either reboot the system, or try to find the bad processus which were still using libsyslog-ng.so.0.0.0 (lsof | grep libsyslog-ng.so.0.0.0), and terminate it.

So, the bug occurred when syslog-ng wasn't restarted properly, because the current pid file store the pid of syslog-ng, not of the process "above" it, whom started syslog-ng.

Hopefully, it was "only" 2 GB saved in one month.

in fact, the bug is trivial to solved, because reboot the entire system kill this bad process, and syslog-ng starts fine after, but maybe create some tests to check the presence of this kind of bad behavior.

Thanks for support.

Reproducible: Didn't try

I have seen a syslog-ng daemon run out of fds because of this.
Comment 3 Mr. Bones. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-08-08 03:36:45 UTC
What do you envision might be the "fix" for this? It doesn't seem like something the ebuild can reasonably do anything about.
