While emerging kde. Gets part way through compiling, then crashes. I ran emerge --fetchonly kdebase then emerge kdebase At some point there appears to be a segmentation fault (on one occaision the system hung instead of rebooting) While it had hung, I couldn't switch to another terminal. I had to hit the power switch :( Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Bootstrapped the system pretty much following the quick setup guide. 2. logged in as root. 3. emerge kdebase Actual Results: System rebooted (dirty & nasty reboot too) part-way through compiling. Expected Results: installed a nice window manager. Instead I'm stuck with TWM. Created attachment 29346 [details] emerge kdebase | tee output.log This is the output from the compiler. Cheers, Julian
This indicates a hardware problem. Probably your processor is getting too hot.
Thanks for that. I've reset my processor to 2GHz and am re-compiling now. I'll post back with my results (which hopefully should be good) Cheers, Julian
I Reset my processor to 2GHz (no longer overclocked) it's still happening. According to the Bios, my processor (within 20 seconds of a reboot) is sitting at 43 degrees c. I'm not certain that it is an overheating issue. This was the last of the text on screen when it last hung. Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address d0000000 printing eip: c0235800 *pde = 00000000 I've attached the output again

I've changed the memory command rate in the BIOS, and the System no-longer hangs on this error. It still produces an error :( It seems that this error occurs when I'm emerging anything that requires qt-3.3.0-r1 The same error also occured when I tried emerge arts. It will now exit after a segmentation fault. Atleast it exits a litle nicer now :)
Qt is a very intense package to build. Still seems like you're having local hardware problems, though.
sounds like a local issue - don't think we can help out on this one.
